We are all taught as children that we should be grateful. Even when we got that horrible, itchy, vomit coloured jumper for Christmas as a kid, our parents would say “be grateful you got anything at all.”
Of course, showing others that you are grateful for the things that they do for you makes sense and is a nice thing to do. However, we too often then forget to be grateful for the things in our lives and what we have ourselves. Being grateful for everything in our life doesn’t come naturally to us, particularly at hard times, so let us help you to learn more about how you can be grateful each and every day.
Stop being so picky
If you are finding it hard to find the things that you should be grateful for, then maybe you are not looking hard enough. Stop being so picky and realise that gratitude is there all around us, we just need to try our hardest to look for it. Sometimes we may surprise ourselves with the things that we can be grateful for in our lives.
It could be something simple like the sunshine or a hot cup of tea. Whatever it is, finding a reason to be thankful is going to put you in the best mood.
See challenges as something to be grateful for
It isn’t nice to face something that you know is going to challenge you. However, it is these challenges that help us to grow, change and learn. So, they definitely are something to be grateful for. Think of them as a positive thing. Think of them as something that will be able to help you for the rest of your life, if not just for right now. Which is always something to be grateful for.
Keep a journal
One of the best ways to make sure that you are grateful is to keep a gratitude journal. It acts as a visual reminder that you should be looking for things each and every day. Which could make all the difference in whether or not you are able to spot the positives in all the experiences that you have in your life.
Offer your time
Gratitude is something that can push you to make changes in your life and offer yourself out to others who may need it more than you. A great way to make sure that you feel more grateful about your life is to offer out your time and volunteer. Not only will this help you to feel better about how you spend your time, but also helps those out who need the help too.
Being grateful can be hard, especially when times are tough, but by trying your focus on the positive and the things that you have rather than the things that you don’t. In no time at all you will be able to spot those things for yourself.
